Registered-office packages: check the service behind the address

An address package can sound like a simple purchase, but it may involve several different services. A registered office, a place where you trade and a mail-handling service are not necessarily interchangeable. Before choosing the lowest price, establish which address arrangement your company needs and what the provider will actually deliver.

Confirm suitability before signing

Ask the relevant registry what makes an address acceptable for your entity. Give the provider the precise intended use and request written confirmation of its service scope. Avoid relying only on a label such as “virtual office.” Ask which documents you will receive to support the arrangement and whether additional permissions are needed.

Check how important mail reaches you

Ask who receives documents, how quickly they are scanned, which items are forwarded and what costs extra. Confirm the process for legal notices and deliveries requiring a signature. Test whether notifications go to an email account you control. A low monthly charge is poor value if urgent mail sits unnoticed.

Understand the end of the arrangement

Before cancelling, determine whether you must file a change of address and provide an alternative. Ask how long the provider will forward late mail and when it stops accepting deliveries. Keep proof that your new address and contact details have been recorded with each relevant authority, rather than assuming one change updates every system.

Put it into practice

  • Confirm the permitted use of the address.
  • Ask about scanning, forwarding and storage charges.
  • Identify who monitors notices when you are away.
  • Record renewal and cancellation deadlines.

Your next step

Compare address providers using a service checklist, not just a location or postal code. If banking or licensing matters, ask those institutions separately what address evidence they require.

Official sources & scope

UK example: GOV.UK describes requirements for registered-office and email addresses. Those rules should not be copied to other jurisdictions without checking their own requirements.
